Have you ever noticed that how you start your day often impacts the whole day—for good or for bad?
How do you usually feel when your head comes off the pillow? Ready? Anxious? Energized? Defeated?
If you're like me, this changes constantly. Some mornings I'm ready to tackle anything that comes my way. Other days I don't even want to get out of bed.
But what if there's a simple way to change the direction of your entire day, no matter how you feel when you first wake up? I believe that way is gratitude.
Hear me out.
What if, before your feet even hit the floor, you shift your attitude and your focus? What if, instead of letting worries flood in, you intentionally turn your heart toward the Lord in thanksgiving?
Imagine this: Tomorrow morning your eyes open and the world comes rushing in—responsibilities, to-do lists, troubles, and worries. The weight of it all feels heavy, like a burden instead of a privilege.
In that moment, you have a choice.
You can let the cares of the day pull you down, or you can choose to give thanks first.
Why Gratitude Changes Everything
The Bible tells us, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).
Every new morning is a fresh gift from God—another day to walk with Him, to love others, and to grow in grace. Gratitude doesn’t deny the hard things; it simply chooses to see God’s goodness first.
When we start the day thanking Him, our perspective shifts. Anxiety loses its grip. Peace settles in. And step into the day with a heart that’s already turned toward the One who holds it all.
Here’s a practical habit you can begin tomorrow morning:
1) The moment you wake up—before checking your phone—whisper a short prayer of thanks.
2) Name three specific things you’re grateful for (even small ones: a warm bed, breath in your lungs, God’s unfailing love).
3) Speak or pray Psalm 118:24 out loud: “This is the day the Lord has made; I will rejoice and be glad in it.”
It only takes a minute or two, but it sets a completely different tone for everything that follows.
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Notice it doesn’t say we have to feel thankful in every situation—it says to give thanks. Gratitude is an act of obedience and faith that invites God’s presence into our day.
Tomorrow morning, don’t let worry win the first battle of the day.
Wake up with gratitude instead. Thank God for the new day, for His mercy that is “new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23), and for the simple fact that you belong to Him.
Try it for the next seven days and see what happens. I’d love to hear how it changes your heart and your days.

Let’s choose gratitude together—one morning at a time.
