Momma's Can Sir Sermon
In 1947 all they could do for Momma was operate
to cut out all cancer affected tissue and hope.
Some thought cancer was contagious so we children
were sent to live with relatives until Mom was well.
In later years she would begin her 'Can Sir' sermon
with a short summary of that experience, then tell
that she'd had a disease far more devastating than cancer
its name is "Can't, Sir" and tell how she walked away
from God's call on her life to preach His Word in adolescence.
When some uninformed, well-meaning critics chastised her
she had told God "I can't do this, I just can't Sir."
Then, with a gleam in her eye and joy radiating all round
she would tell how through the years God patiently gave her
the strength to accept the work He had for her no matter what.
She'd look up and say, "By Your grace, in this place, I can, Sir."
Looking to the congregation she'd challenge
"Let this Can Sir be contagious. Look beyond the cant's
and embrace the cans. If He calls you to do a thing
it simply means He will do that thing through you."
So look up and say, "By Your grace, in this place, I can, Sir."
