Only One Life

"Only one life 'twill soon be past ~
Only what's done for Christ will last!"

Seconds change to minutes,
Minutes to hours,
Hours to days,
And months to years.

So  many times when day is done,
I ask myself this question,
"Have I made this day count?"

Time can be wasted ~
It can be fretted away ~
But it can have purpose
If we just look.

There are the lame, the blind and aged,
The sick, the fearful, and the lost,
There is the little child,
Or the saddened neighbor
Who often needs a cheery smile.

The folks we meet each day
As we go along our way ~
These too may need a touch
Of God's almighty hand.

Some may have riches made of gold,
Others have talents we are told.
What 'ere our Father has given us
We should be willing to share.

So oft' we become careless,
We stall or we forget;
It might be easier to obey
The urgent pleading of our soul ~

Remembering always:
"Only one life 'twill soon be past ~
Only what's done for Christ will last!"

A note from the author:   - Sharon Marie Younker -

This poem was written by me in 1967. It is based upon a lovely plaque that was given to me by a dear friend, Georgia Sargent, just as I was going into surgery.
For many years, the plaque hung above my telephone as a reminder to me that it is only those things that are done for Christ will last.

( Note: the plaque was lost during a move)
