Getting caught up in the moment, being lost in thought, Ever impacted by the teacher as much as what he taught? Not noticing how time passed by nor what others do? At that point there are only three things in your world; The Teacher, His Word, and you.
Ever wonder what a woman would be in such a spot? Could she be daydreaming? Maybe so and maybe not. Some may judge her lazy. Could she care for ought? Her heart was on the Teacher & the Words He taught.
Her spot was at the foot, never at the head. She didn't notice hunger, upon the Word she fed. What could it matter, her soul feasted instead. Her tummy wasn't hungry cause her soul was being fed.
Although the poem above is about the day Mary was lost in Jesus teaching as recorded in Luke. We find her lost in her own grief upon another occasion recorded by John. So we see that Mary was like many of us today. She had what my daddy called a one track mind. A one track mind is not a bad thing as long as the track is good. So if you have a one track mind like Mary and me, fasten your seatbelt, keep your focus eternal, and make sure your on His track.
Mary of Bethany
Luke 10:38-41
John 11, 12:1-3
Luke 10:38-41 Mary is obviously the lesser of the sisters. She doesn't say much. She is ever linked with Martha and it is Martha who does the talking.
Count the words credited to Mary Now count the words credited to Martha .
John 11:32 Count the words of Mary.
John 11:21-22 If your not convinced, count the words of Martha.
Mary communicated most often through actions. On two separate occasions someone was not happy with Mary's choice in action. On these recorded occasions Jesus said
see Luke 10:42 and John 12:7 .
It is the one track minded person who is most often capable of blind trust for their focus on faith is not easily distracted. It is also true that same person focused on their surroundings or situation needs more help to derail the negative and get back on the right track. That is why we find the same woman who was lost in Jesus teachings (Luke10:38-41) unaffected by His drawing near (John 11:20) & capable of such a costly service (John 12:3-5)
Luke 10:38-41 Why do you think Martha responded to Mary as she did?
John 11:31 Why do you think the Jews responded to Mary as they did
John 12:4-6 Why do you think Judas Iscariot responded to Mary as he did?
In each of these 3 cases above do you think the responce had an affect on Mary's decision or action?
Luke 10:38-41 Why?
John 11:28-29 Why?
John 12:7-8 Why?
Although a person with a one track mind may seem unconcerned about an event or circumstance, it is far more likely they are simply unaware due to their focus at the time. I submit to you John chapter 11 as evidence. While Martha, who was able to focus on several things at once, became aware Jesus was near, Mary remained in the house until (John 11:28-30):
And then:
Every Martha needs a Mary and every Mary needs a Martha. Since God has supplied all our needs take a moment and determine the following:
