Is your home a showplace yet
never neat as it should be?
Is there always something
more needing done you see?

Are your family members lazy,
leaving it all for you to do?
Does it seem nobody cares
the workload piled on you?

Do you wonder how a woman
as busy as you are
Could find a quiet time
to rest and let your spirit soar?

All these things that you do
are very fine indeed !
Yet how important are they
when your soul is left in need?
Martha
Luke 10:38-41   John 11-12:1-3

Luke
10:38 Who's home was this?
Who invited Jesus & company?

*Notice that although Mary may have lived with Martha (or not) it is clear that it was Martha who was "in charge".

10:39 She had a sister who's name was , who also sat
What does the word also imply?
In the context of this paragraph who also sat?
Where did they sit?
Why were they there?

    10:40
  • King James says Martha was cumbered.
  • New International Version says Martha was distracted.
  • Living Bible says Martha was the jittery type and worried.
  • The Revised Standard Version says Martha was distracted.
  • Strongs defines the word(s) translated in these versions as:
  • "to drag all around ~ to distract with care:-cumbered"
~SO~

Having all this information what do you think motivated Martha to ask for help?

10:41 Do you agree that Jesus first words in responce to Martha show that He was concerned for Martha? He understood where Martha was coming from?

10:42 How did Jesus meet Martha where she was and teach her?
What did He teach her?

*What do you think were alternatives for Martha to fulfill her obligations as hostess and disciple and sister and friend without doing it all herself?

John
11:1&14 Who was Martha's brother? What happened to her brother?

11:5 How did Jesus regard Martha's family?

11:19 What was going on at Martha's?

11:20 How is Martha's actions here different from before?

11:21-27 Jesus teaches Martha what truth here?

11:38-44 What do Martha's words "he stinks" reveal?
How did Jesus comfort her at that point?

And then the greatest object lesson anyone ever saw: Lazarus came forth!
