As little Joash lay sleeping in the royal nursery
His grandmother killed his family.
And her plan for little Joash was no mystery.

His aunt grabbed him up and ran with him
As fast as she could go
And hid him and his nurse in her bedroom
So Grandma wouldn't know.

He never had to wonder about his God
For this woman was married to the priest
And they taught him from God's Word.

2Kings 11:1-3 Jehosheba 2Chronicles 22:10-12

Have you ever found yourself in possession of knowledge you'd rather not be so?
But there was no doubt and in your heart you knew
you had to act on what you'd come to know?
There was no time to contemplate, even "now" may be too late?

This woman followed her heart, putting herself in the path of great danger.
She rescued more than a little child that day, she rescued her nation.
Athaliah must have had great influence to get by with her massacre
And we can see that everyone was afraid to go against her.

But hope was alive in the person of a little boy hidden in the temple.
He was not just hidden, he was taught God's law and he was trained to be king.
This story is an example of how there are times for instant action and
There are times that require patience while calmly working toward the goal.
Both of these accounts are identical. After reading the one of your choice (or both) write the highlights of this story:

What impresses you most about the following characters:
Athaliah
Azariah
Jehoiada
Jehosheba
Joash
his nurse

Although our poem says Jehosheba ran with Joash Scripture is not clear as to just how Joash and his nurse got to the temple. It is just as possible that the nurse was the one who brought the child and informed Jehoiada & Jehosheba what was going on. What we do know for certain is that Jehosheba was the one who hid Joash and his nurse. We also know this was considered an act of treason by Athaliah (2Chronisles 23:13). We do know that Jehosheba was the daughter of Athaliah's husband and that her brother, King Azariah was 23 (2Chronicles 22:2) when he died.

Can you bring this senerio into today on a spiritual plane?
Perhaps you or someone you know is living this same kind of horror.
You may be the one who has followed her heart to deliver someone else from harm.
You may be quietly doing what is at your hand today for the hope of tomorrow.
This story is not just about Jehosheba, although she was vital. Many people co-operated and any one of them could have ruined it for the rest. Each one of them was vital in their own way. It took everyone in their place doing their thing to pull it off. Today we need each other just as they did in that day. Today we are each one vital in God's plan and if we all work together there will be great rejoicing like there was in 2Chronicles 23:12.

Look for a way in which you have been helped when you could not help yourself.
Take time to thank God for that one who risked helping you:
